This project involved the comprehensive rehabilitation of the 100-year-old Wurts Street Suspension Bridge in Kingston, NY. The Wurts Street Bridge is not only a functional piece of infrastructure but also a historic landmark, contributing to the aesthetic and cultural heritage of the Rondout District in Kingston, NY.

Prior to the rehabilitation project, the Wurts Street Bridge was in a severely deteriorated condition. Several key components of the bridge exhibited significant wear and damage, necessitated immediate attention to ensure the safety and longevity of the structure. The project was designed to be extensive, addressing multiple critical aspects of the bridge's structure.

Modjeski and Masters was tasked by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Region 8 to complete final design of the rehabilitation of this structure, including deck replacements, roadway barrier replacement, replacement of stringers, strengthening floorbeams, expansion joint replacement, strengthening of main cable anchorages, and replacement of suspender ropes. A dehumidification system was also installed in the anchorage chambers to greatly reduce the rate of corrosion.

M&M also performed preliminary design, developing rehabilitation options and life cycle costs for maintaining the bridge for periods of 10, 25, and 50 years (the 50-year option was selected by the DOT).

By addressing extensive structural issues and incorporating modern advancements, the project has successfully revived a cherished landmark, ensuring its continued service for generations to come.
