Iowa DOT Bridge Inspections

I-80 WB/EB and US 34 over the Missouri River Bridges

M&M performed routine biennial inspections of three bridges crossing the Missouri River.

The I-80 Bridges connect Council Bluffs, Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska with twin multi-plate girder structures. M&M’s inspection approach to these structures included a combination of technical and aid climbing along with inspection access equipment. M&M also assisted with railroad coordination and obtaining railroad permits for access of the structure above a large rail yard on the Nebraska side.

The US-34 Bridge over the Missouri River is located south of the Omaha, Nebraska metro area near the confluence of the Missouri and Patte Rivers. The bridge supports four-lanes of US-34 with a combination of steel plate girders and pre-stressed concrete beams. Much of the area beneath the structure is floodplain, limiting the usefulness of ariel lifts from below. M&M’s inspection utilized both technical climbing and an under bridge inspection unit.

All inspections were conducted in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the Iowa DOT Bridge Inspection Manual.
