One of the twin steel box girders of the Bert Kouns Bridge, which carries I-49 Over LA526, was damaged by an over-height vehicle. Through an open-end agreement with LADOTD, M&M was contacted to perform an independent analysis, and review the repair plans and procedures developed by others.
LADOTD also had M&M perform field instrumentation of the repair procedure to quantify the strains present and to verify that strain with the selected new box girder section installed were under allowable strains. Fifty vibrating wire strain gages were installed to avoid drift in readings and allow for long-term monitoring over several months.
M&M also performed an LRFD rating of the structure in the final rehabilitation condition.
