New York State Bridge Authority Asset Management Plan

    The New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA) is responsible for managing, maintaining and operating a transportation infrastructure which handles over 58 million crossings a year. This includes almost 40,000 feet of main bridge structure, interchanges at the ends of those structures, toll plazas, and maintenance facilities. To assure the continued safe and efficient operation of this infrastructure, the NYSBA needed a plan. More specifically, they needed an asset management plan.
     
    As they have done for nearly fifty years, the NYSBA turned to Modjeski and Masters. Working as their General Engineering Consultant, we assisted them in the development of their asset management plan, the basis for their capital program. We also worked with the NYSBA to issue certificates to their bonding company that would help determine the acceptability of any project involving capital outlay. Projects selected for inclusion in the capital program are decided upon jointly by Modjeski and Masters and the NYSBA. That selection is based on the findings of the annual bridge inspections as well as on projected toll revenues. 
     
    Our relationship with the NYSBA has endured for decades, beginning with our design of the Mid-Hudson Bridge in the mid 1920s and continuing to our current role as their General Engineering Consultant. Within that period, we have led the design of two more of their major bridges: the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, in the 1960s, and its twin in the 1980s. Today, we provide ongoing engineering services, including bridge inspections, design of miscellaneous repairs, oversight of construction, and general input into the continued safe maintenance and operation of their facility.
